THE GRIEF BEFORE GRIEF…

Anticipatory grief is the emotional response to a loss that hasn't happened yet but that you can see coming. It is its own distinct experience, running alongside the day-to-day of caring for your pet, and it does not make the grief that follows it hurt less.

With pets especially, this kind of grief tends to be layered with:

  • Uncertainty about timing — you might have a diagnosis but no clear timeline, which keeps your nervous system in a low-grade state of alert for weeks or months.

  • The caregiving paradox — you're actively nursing, medicating, and showing up for your pet every day, while simultaneously mourning the fact that all of it is temporary.

  • Disenfranchised grief — the sense that this kind of loss isn't taken as seriously by the people around you as a human loss would be, even though it can feel just as devastating.

None of this means something is wrong with you. It means you love your animal and your brain and body are responding accordingly.
